If you are interested in becoming a rideshare driver but are unsure about Uber and/or Lyft’s driver requirements, here is a short guide.
Driver Requirements
Regardless of which Uber and/or Lyft platform you choose, you must satisfy the following driver requirements:
• You must be at least 21 years old.
• You must have three or more years of driving experience. If you have recently moved from another state, Uber and/or Lyft may need to verify your driving history. It is a good idea to keep your out-of-state driver license in case Uber and/or Lyft headquarters requests it.
• You must have a valid in-state driver’s license.
• You must have current in-state car insurance registered in your name.
• You must have a car that is registered for driving in your state. It is NOT required for the vehicle to be registered in your name.
• You must have a social security number in order to go through Uber and/or Lyft’s mandatory background check.
Background Check Information
If you have a clean driving record, you should be in good shape to work for Uber and/or Lyft. Nonetheless, you must pass a background check. Completion of the background check could take several days or even several weeks. In order to pass the background check, you CANNOT have any of the following offenses on your record within the past seven years:
• Charges of driving with a suspended license
• Charges of failing to provide insurance
• Charges of reckless driving
• Accidents involving a fatality
• DUI or drug-related offenses
• Criminal offenses of any kind
Reasons your application may be denied
Your age:
If your application is denied because of your age, you must simply wait until you are 21 years old.
Failure to pass background check:
If you did not pass your background check, you can request information about what specifically prevented you from passing. If what is listed on Uber and/or Lyft’s background check is correct, you will have to wait about seven years from the date of the incident for it to be dropped from your record.
Failure to produce required in-state documents:
You must have a driver license, car insurance, and car registration to drive for Uber and/or Lyft. Once you obtain these documents, simply reapply.
You are not a legal United States working resident or you do not have a social security number:
If you have immigrated to the United States, consult with an immigration lawyer. Your visa document may be preventing you from working in the U.S. Uber and/or Lyft might allow you to sign up with the social security number that you have, but this could violate the terms of your issued visa and is therefore not recommended.
Your Uber and/or Lyft car does not qualify:
